ČSLA Airborne Container
Cargo Container GK-30
ČSLA airborne cargo container GK-30 (Gruzovoj Kontejner) – padded container for transporting equipment during airborne operations.
The abbreviation GK-30 stands for cargo container (Russian: Gruzovoj Kontejner). It was used by ČSLA paratroopers to transport sensitive equipment during parachute jumps – such as radio sets or meteorological kits (ADK). Paratroopers nicknamed it gékáčko.
Outer shell
Rigid shell with closing straps. Pockets on the shell are fitted with rubber draws for safe storage of the rope and accessories.
Inner lining (padded)
Padded inner lining protected stored equipment from impact during landing – radio sets, meteorological kits (ADK) etc.
Rope
A 15-metre white rope. One end has a loop attached to the container's shoulder straps, the other end has a loop and a metal carabiner. Everything is stored neatly in the pockets on the outer shell.
Attachment to harness
Before boarding the aircraft, the container is attached via a strap and carabiner to the circular (seat) strap of the parachute harness. Through loops on the container, special straps clipped to chest buckles secure it around the paratrooper's waist.
Release under canopy
After canopy opening, the paratrooper releases the container and drops it on the 15m rope beneath himself. The container lands 3 seconds before the paratrooper, reducing the impact load.
Night jumps
Paratroopers preferred using the GK-30 at night. The thud of the container hitting the ground served as a warning signal to prepare for their own landing.
Accessories and acceptance marks
Accessories include a carry bag, straps and a 15m white rope. All components carry army acceptance marks: crossed swords and the year of acceptance (64, 65 etc.).
