Assault knife model 48 – view no. 1
Prototype folding switchblade assault knife from 1948
In 1948 it was developed and manufactured in a small number of pieces at Zbrojovka Brno. The knife is marked on the blade E3 lion 48. It apparently underwent general military trials but was not adopted into army armament. On the other side of the blade is the serial number 002. A knife marked 002 also appeared, but on the upper face of the blade ricasso — the number is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the knife. On the side of the ricasso is the Zbrojovka Brno mark. Another knife marked 016 has the number stamped in the same location but along the longitudinal axis; the remaining markings are identical.
The knife has a folding single-edged blade with a central point. The blade is chemically blackened and is locked in both closed and open positions by a side safety. The operating system is single-element and has no retainer. The fittings are made of blackened steel. The scales are made of texgumoid. At the rear of the handle, on a single axis, are two lockable folding attachments: a spike and a can opener. At the end of the handle a suspension ring is pivotally attached, which simultaneously serves as a second pull safety when the side safety is disengaged. In different specimens the execution of this suspension ring varies slightly.
