Cutaway displays were produced for classrooms by the military repair plants VOP. Bayonet cutaways can be encountered in several variants — it is however important to distinguish original VOP work from later imitations made by individuals for the collector market.
How to identify an original VOP cutaway
Oval milled hole
Original VOP cutaways have an oval hole through the guard, through which the guide spring of the locking pin is visible.
Imitation – round drilled hole
Imitations have this hole merely drilled — it has the shape of a classic round drill hole, not an oval shape.
Imitation – entire guard milled out
The second common imitation has the guard entirely milled from top to bottom to half the pin depth down to the ricasso of the bayonet. Another identifying feature is a chipboard scale in the cutaway.
