Development of the MK.1 bayonet

The Czech assault rifle BREN 2 was presented to the public in 2015 and from 2016 gradually made its way to individual military units. A need arose — just as with the BREN 1 rifle — to include a multi-purpose bayonet in the accessories that a soldier could also use as a standalone knife.

The rifle manufacturer, Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod, therefore contacted the designer of most ACR knives and the leading ACR close-combat instructor, Maj. Roman Hippík. Their collaboration lasted two years before everything was refined to its final form. The first knives reached the army in 2021 and deliveries are continuing.

The first developmental pieces were made at home by the designer himself — the handle was made of wood for ease of machining. Once the basic shapes were finalized, he handed production over to Mikov, with whom he has a long-standing partnership. The inspiration was the UTON knife — the pommel of the bayonet was modified so that it could also serve with accessories as a file and saw.

Description

The knife blade is made of stainless steel 1.4034 with a thickness of 4.8 mm and hardness of 58 HRc. It has a sabre grind with a false edge converging to a central tip and a DLC surface finish — a material composed of carbon with high hardness, extreme lubricity and light reflectance below 4%.

The handle is made of durable ZYTEL material with an ergonomic shape and textured surface. The guard and pommel are made of spring steel 1.8159 with DLC surface finish. The MK.1 knife can be fully disassembled using a hex key no. 3.

The knife comes with a kydex self-locking sheath for attachment to a belt (max. width 5 cm) or molle webbing. The sheath is manufactured by 4M — a subsidiary of Česká zbrojovka. Accessories include a saw, file, and black paracord.
